A persistent musty odour or unexplained respiratory symptoms are often the first signs of a hidden mould colony. While visual inspections are a starting point, they cannot quantify the concentration or type of mould spores circulating in your air. This is a critical issue in Sydney, where high humidity and specific building types, from Federation homes in the Inner West to modern high-rises, create unique moisture challenges. Our air sampling service provides the definitive data needed to understand the scope of an infestation.
We deploy IICRC-certified technicians to collect measurable air samples, providing a clear baseline of your indoor air quality. This is not a generic service; it is a forensic process designed to identify the specific genus and concentration of spores, such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, or the more concerning Stachybotrys chartarum (black mould), that may be proliferating within wall cavities, subfloors, or HVAC systems.
Our Air Sampling Protocol: Data for Defensible Decisions
Our process is built on precision and adherence to Australian standards. We follow the protocols outlined in the AS-IICRC S520 to ensure our findings are accurate, repeatable, and defensible.
When Air Sampling is Non-Negotiable for Sydney Properties
Air sampling provides critical data in specific scenarios where a visual inspection alone is insufficient.

Suspected Hidden Mould
In many older Sydney properties, particularly in suburbs like Balmain and Leichhardt with sandstone foundations and rising damp issues, mould thrives unseen behind walls or under floors. If you smell mould but can't see it, air sampling is the only way to confirm an active indoor source.

Post-Remediation Clearance
After mould removal work, air sampling is used to verify that the remediation was successful. This clearance testing confirms that spore counts have returned to normal levels (Condition 1), providing peace of mind and crucial documentation for property records.

Property Transactions
Pre-purchase inspections often benefit from air quality data, especially in buildings within the Eastern Suburbs or Northern Beaches known for coastal humidity and condensation issues. It provides buyers with a clear picture of potential hidden liabilities.

Health and Allergy Concerns
When occupants experience persistent allergies, asthma, or respiratory issues that worsen indoors, air quality testing can help determine if elevated spore counts from species like Aspergillus or Alternaria are a contributing factor.
What Your NATA-Accredited Lab Report Reveals
Your report will differentiate between common outdoor moulds and those indicating an internal moisture problem. It identifies the specific genera and their airborne concentration.

Aspergillus/Penicillium
Commonly found indoors and associated with damp materials and high humidity. Elevated levels often point to issues within HVAC systems or wall cavities.

Cladosporium
A common outdoor mould, but its presence in high indoor concentrations can indicate a contamination event, often on painted surfaces or wood.

Stachybotrys chartarum
Known as "toxic black mould," its presence is a significant red flag. It requires chronic water damage to grow on cellulose materials like gyprock and timber framing, and its identification necessitates a specific remediation protocol under the IICRC S520 standard.
Air Sampling FAQs
What is Air Sampling?
Air sampling is a process that uses a calibrated pump to draw a measured volume of air through a specialized cassette, such as an Air-O-Cell. The cassette traps airborne particles, including mould spores, which are then identified and counted under a microscope by a NATA-accredited lab.
Does air sampling remove mould?
No. Air sampling is a diagnostic tool used to measure contamination. It is the first step that informs a targeted remediation plan if required.
Is air sampling always required?
No. It is recommended only when mould is suspected but not visible, for post-remediation verification, or to investigate health concerns. We will not recommend it unless it provides genuine value.
How long does sampling take?
The on-site collection is typically completed within 60-90 minutes. Laboratory analysis and reporting usually take [3-5] business days, depending on the lab’s workload.
